We read about a new Cafe/Restaurant called Gismo in Sukhumvit with a very promising menu so we had to go visit for a brunch. The cafe is tucked away in Soi 39 and is a bright and green space that is inviting and friendly. The brunch menu is not very extensive but has some very inviting and tasty sounding options like Tuna Crostini, Eggs Benedict and a breakfast pan with eggs, sausages , cauliflower, cheese and almonds and so we ordered the latter two alongside with a Cafe Latte.
The first dish served was the Eggs Benedict with mushroom ham. This dish looks beautiful and ready to be put on any foodies isntagram account, sadly the taste could not deliver on what the optical impression promised. The use of sourdough bread is commendable but the slice was so thick that it became like a sponge sucking up the taste of the eggs and the sauce. The hollandaise sauce, which was already was not very intense could therefore hardly be tasted and the eggs and ham pretty much suffered the same fate. Also the poached eggs were cold and so we assume pre-cooked. It should be noted that cold egg yolk is not an improvement for Eggs Benedict. However, the potato salad served on the side was quite nice.
Secondly we received a hot plate which we thought of sending back immediately because the content was swimming in oil. We decided to spoon as much of the oil out of it and give it a try and surprisingly this was also quite boring. There was nothing that helped to elevate the taste of the cheese and cauliflower as the sausages were quite bland and once the eggs and the rest of the oil got together the dish became quite soupy. It seemed to me that this dish embodied the problem of the whole cafe: a good idea with a bad execution.
Even the coffee was bland and tasted more like a cup of hot milk than anything else. The dishes come also for quite a hefty price. The Eggs Bendedict for 320 (++) and the Breakfast pan for 380 (++) and there are plenty of places around that deliver outstanding food for similar costs.
When we left we noticed that all the plants in the Cafe are made out pf plastic. So overall we were not impressed even though the menu options for lunch and dinner sound mouthwatering on the menu – I doubt that we will be back to give it a try.
